Two early 13th-century Icelandic sagas concerning the discovery of America with differing details In Grænlendinga Saga (The Saga of the Greenlanders), it is a Norwegian merchant, Bjarni Herjólfsson, who first discovered America but did not go ashore. In Eiríks Saga Rauða (The Saga of Erik the Red), it is Leifur Eiríksson, who first discovered but did not go ashore. It was an Icelandic merchant, Thorfinn Karlsefni, who led an expedition from Greenland to Vinland and established an ill-fated settlement there.
