Schimmelmann published the first German translation of Snorri's Edda. Árni Björnsson remarks in Wagner and the Volsungs that Schimmelmann saw Snorri Sturluson “as an enlightened ruler, governor and judge who had rescued the Edda manuscripts from the ‘barbarism’ of the Popish church” (85), and Schimmelmann had other eccentric views concerning the origins of Old Norse mythology.
